Spotlight Saturday

It usually follows suit that someone who gains instant celebrity status, usually becomes an instant fashion icon and that appears to be what has happened with Kate Middleton, or as called by her 'new' royal name...Catherine Duchess of Cambridge.  She's in the spotlight today because the tabloids have been making note of the fact that her wardrobe is less than colorful.  To see if this was in fact true, I went back and checked some reputable sources and the verdict is in that this is in fact 'truth'!  Where's the color Kate? Why so drab?  She's gorgeous, thin & Prince William's new bride but she needs to up her game because lately, she's definitely been lacking in the wow factor in regards to the ensembles she chooses for events in which she's under the watchful eye of the paps.  It's time to get your swag back on Kate, you're too young for the drab neutrals you've been choosing as of late!...

Perhaps since gaining royalty status, you want to divert us from this image?  Not gonna happen, we know that you're no modest mouse girlfriend!

Spotlight Saturday

Just got wind that soulful singer Amy Winehouse is back in rehab at the advice of her doctor, but the news said she was caught stopping off at a party store prior to re-admittance, to get herself a small bottle of Smirnoff!  Her last run at rehab was in 2008 which makes me think of that old joke about how...'rehab is for quitters'! ah ha!

The English born songwriter, who's voice does not match her petite frame has been popular since we first heard her hit song ironically titled 'Rehab', back in 2006.  This beehive toting mama was the first in a very long time to bring back the soulful sound of the old days.

Last year, she tried her hand at fashion designing, but I never heard of anything coming into fruition.   There could have been many reasons, one being that the collection was designed after her own clothing style which isn't considered by many to be fashionable...or it could have been simply because people had fallen out of love with her because of the fact she's wasted pretty much all of her talents on her addiction that she so freely puts out there without regard for how her audience perceives her?

It's kind of like...she doesn't care, so why should we?

Sorry Janice Dickinson...You Were NOT The World's 1st Super Model!

A few weeks ago I happened to catch the end of Celebrity Rehab on VH1 and this years season featured the self proclaimed 'World's 1st Super Model' Janice Dickinson. Obviously she wasn't aware that the term 'super model' was already known in the 1940's so this prompted me to delve a little bit into the subject to see if there was any validity to the label.

Regardless of the fact that the writer Judith Cass used the term in 1942 for her article in ‘The Chicago Tribune’ which headlined…”Super Models Are Signed For Fashion Show”, Janice states claim to coining the phrase in 1979 when her manager, concerned that she was working too hard told her, “You are not superman” to which she replied..”I am a super model!”.  She obviously didn’t know what she was talking about being that the term had already become popular in the 60’s which was way before she was working the cat walk.

That's "your bad" Janice for not schooling yourself on the history of your craft because anyone who's into fashion both vintage & current knows who Twiggy is and also knows that at just 16 she became the first prominent teenage model best known for her signature boyish hair style, long eyelashes and thin build.  She was modeling worldwide and was named ‘The Face of 1966” by the Daily Express.

There have been many since Ms. Dickinson who were referred to as super models such as Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley and the infamous wild child Gia Carangi however, the facts remain that on March 21st 1967, The New York Times referred to Twiggy as the first super model & Glamour magazine did as well in 1968.

I don’t know about you but whenever I’ve pondered the words fashion and model, I’ve always thought of Twiggy…
