It's hard to believe that Veruschka von Lehndorff, the popular model of the 1960's whose name was shortened to simply 'Veruschka', turned 71 this year. Born in Russia, but of German descent, she came from a military background being that her father was a German Count & Army reserve officer who was a part of the German resistance. He was executed when she was five years old for attempting to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Although she was born into wealth, after her father's death her family was left homeless.
She was discovered at the age of 20, and began modeling full-time in Paris. In 1961 she became acquainted with Eileen Ford of the Ford Modeling Agency & moved to New York. Being a huge fan of the infamous eccentric Salvador Dali, I was amazed to discover that she had worked closely with him on several projects!
Although modeling was her forte', she had dabbled in acting a bit appearing in only about a dozen films, none of which were box office hits, her last being a bit part in the 2006 Casino Royale, a prequel to the popular James Bond movies. Throughout her modeling career, she appeared on the cover of Vogue quite a few times which made her well known around the world. Her look was uniquely distinctive and she was the ultimate chameleon when it came to adapting to the ever changing style trends of the 60's...
Being a Countess by her birth right, she was the epitome of the rags to riches story having gone back and forth between wealth, poverty and finally doing very well for herself in the end. As the years progressed, she became a well known 'Mod' fashion Icon of the 60's, having been the muse of every designer she came in contact with.
Last year, Veruschka made a runway appearance at the Giles 2011 Spring/Summer show in London for fashion week. She was part of his finale sporting a long orchid and bow print gown, with a 7 foot boa decorating her hair, definitely proving that youth really has nothing to do with the way beauty should be perceived.

Linda Morand - MOD Monday
Linda Morand from Long Island, New York, was one of the top fashion models of the mid 60's to mid 70's. She was was originally discovered by Eileen Ford (Ford Modeling) and graced the pages of Vogue, Glamour & Mademoiselle as well as many international fash mags. She was considered to be the favorite model of designers Betsey Johnson & Vidal Sassoon and was one of the first ever American models to be booked from New York to work the runway in Paris.
She had an uncanny resemblance to Jacqueline Kennedy when she was younger and even had the opportunity to meet her doppelganger at P.J. Clarke's in Manhattan in 1971. Her modeling career was more successful in Europe than in the United States as she was the muse to Pierre Cardin, Karl Lagerfeld and Paco Rabanne. She was well versed in her craft that took her on travels through Paris, Milan, Munich and Barcelona. She was one of the most photographed models of the MOD era, who was just like her contemporary Twiggy, was an 'it girl' who set the standard of style for her generation...
Her career was short lived and only spanned a duration of one decade as she retired in 1975 to raise a family. She did however, open a small exclusive modeling school as well as an international photography studio. At present day, the vintage haute couture model spends the majority of her time trying to get a two hour television special off the ground...'The Supermodels Hall Of Fame'
Now in her 70's, Morand could still pass for mid 40's as this once super model, super chick of the 60's is still on top of her game which totally diminishes the usual stereotype of today's supermodels with their eating disorders and heroine chic look and totally gives rise to the old adage that 'they just don't make em' like they used to'!

Brigitte Bardot...Sex Kitten Of The 50's & 60's
There were many female celebrities who sparked the 'women's movement' with their overt sense of sexuality and that was way before pop icon Madonna did back in the 50's & 60's & Brigitte Bardot, was most definitely one of them! Born in Paris, France, Brigitte was a voluptuous beauty who's body image had a major impact on fashion.
A neckline style was even named after her...the 'Bardot' which is a wide open neck exposing both shoulders and a whole lot more!
Her early desire was to be a dancer but soon found fame in acting, becoming known world wide after starring in the sexy thriller 'And God Created Woman'. The film pushed censorship boundaries but as usual..sex always sells however, I have to laugh at the idea of 'a torrid tropical dance' being considered as risque considering what we see on the screen nowadays, let alone at home on our own televisions!
Besides the neckline style, Bardot is said to have been solely responsible for the rise in the popularity of the bikini, as well as the vintage beehive hairstyle. She was called 'bikini girl' because pretty much all of the movies she starred in from the beginning had her portraying naughty sex kittens who pranced around in hardly anything! As her career progressed she flashed some B&B (boobs & bunns) quite often and even agreed to do a rape scene.
In her elder years, Brigitte has been in the tabloids on both a positive and negative note. Positive because she's an animal activist and negative because unfortunately this once beautiful woman is a profound racist who was convicted on June 10th 2004 for 'inciting racial hatred'. A true example of how sometimes 'beauty is only skin deep'...

Maria Shriver...Status Quo Style In Spite Of The Split!
Arnold Schwarzenegger gave the ultimate diss to his soon to be 'ex wife' Maria Shriver by confessing to her that he had a child with the hired help & has been entertaining an affair with his mistress for over a decade! I'm sure you've heard about it by now in the news, in the tabloids, trash mags, etc... She has dealt with many hardships in her family and of course everyone knows about the so called 'Kennedy Curse' which was nicknamed as such, by all of the continued misfortune the clan has had fall upon them.
In spite of it all, Shriver has maintained an air of style, grace and elegance and being a part of America's most legendary family, who would expect anything less? In 2009, she was voted Glamour Magazines 'Woman Of The Year' and rightfully so, as she has been and remains a strong female role model for women everywhere being an activist, author & journalist.
On top of everything else, she loves fashion as she was seen in Paris during fashion week for the Fall/Winter 2011 Chanel Show.
She stated in an interview once that Tom Ford for Gucci was her favorite designer... Regardless of all the hoopla and media frenzy that's surrounding her at the moment, just like always, Maria Shriver is going to come out on top because after all she's a Kennedy!

Whatever Happened to Grace Jones?
Recently I was reading about the days of Studio 54 and this got me to thinking...What ever happened to Grace Jones? Remember her? The scarily sexy androgynous Jamaican-American singer, model and actress?
Born in Jamaica, she moved to New York in 1965 and became a successful model in the city but gained her fame as a clothes horse in Paris more so because her looks were considered 'too strong' for American magazines.
She also studied theatre in Syracuse and became an extremely capable actress which overshadowed her musical talents in America, but not in Europe where her status as a recording artist was much higher. She made some low-budget films in the late 70's, early 80's and became a mainstream actress after starring alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1984 movie Conan The Destroyer.
Jones made a record deal with Island Records in 1977 and put out a bunch of dance club hits. It's said to be known that she is responsible for adapting and emerging a new wave style in music and she definitely incorporated performance art into her grooves. In 81' her album "Pull Up to the Bumper" spent 7 weeks at #2 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club charts.
So where is she now? Although she hasn't made an appearance in any mainstream films since the late 90's, it seems as though the 60'something Ms. Jones is still rocking the microphone in all her glory. Here she is performing at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark wild as ever!
She's also been spotted several years ago during New York Fashion Week participating in the Jean Paul-Goude African Fashion Collection.
A press article last year stated that the infamous Lady GaGa was said to be interested in working with Grace Jones on a musical collaboration to which Jones replied..."She asked, but I said no....I'd prefer to work with someone who is more original and someone who is not trying to copy me actually"...She also added that she probably wouldn't waste her time seeing GaGa in concert.
Bad move on your part Grace, she could have given you a 'leg up' and some new found media exposure as well. And what the heck? If the Queen of Pop Madonna even gave her approval for 'style dupes' to Gaga, you should have too! After all...Imitation is the best form of flattery. Get over your damn self!

Runway GaGa
Pop Icon, activist and now runway model for Thierry Mugler at the Paris Fashion Week 2011? What a perfect show for GaGa to make her debut and an even more perfect fit being that Mugler is known for his shows being a spectator sport. He intertwines fashion with a performance art vibe each setting being extraordinary in its own right.
Of course GaGa performed her new hit 'Born This Way' gyrating amongst the
models on the catwalk and made it one of the most memorable events of the evening I'm sure!
To get an idea of Thierry Mugler's design styles he fashioned the avant garde 'vintage inspired' costumes worn by Lady GaGa and Beyonce in the music video for 'Telephone'.
Mugler incorporates the least likeliest of fabric mediums into his designs: leather, metal and vinyl but nothing tops the meat dress GaGa wore designed by Franc Fernandez! Whether you love her or hate her on her end it's 'mission accomplished' because either way she's always giving us something to talk about!
