Spotlight Saturday - Fashion Against AIDS

Since 2008, Designers Against Aids has made a successful collaboration with several artists & super star singer Rhianna is one of them having launched her own clothing line targeting the younger generation and it's been said that 25% of the proceeds from all sales have been going towards AIDS research.  Her designs are simple featuring tanks, tees and hoodies. Other musicians have gotten in on this gig like 'My Chemical Romance & Katie Perry'.  The idea for this venture was initiated by the DAA, Designers Against AIDS which is a non profit organization that seeks collaborations with fashion designers, musicians and other artists with the sole objective being, to bring awareness to today's youth about the serious nature of the choices they have in protecting themselves from HIV/AIDS.

Fashion In Film Friday

Even though it's absolutely over the top risque', the 1997 film 'Boogie Night's' about the sex industry in the 70's, totally captured the feel of the fashions for that time period.  The movie centers around the lead character, Mark Walhberg who plays Dirk Diggler for reasons I need not explain, but let's just say it's kind of a biography about the life of the late John Holmes who was the 'it' porn guy of the 70's to early 80's before losing his life to AIDS.

Besides the amazing soundtrack that hosted all of the popular tunes we know and love, the costumes featured were on the mark, and so much so that you actually believed it was filmed in the 70's!

The two lead female characters (porn starlets) played by Heather Graham as 'Rollergirl' and Julianne Moore as 'Amber Waves' had the ability to take us back to the days of butterfly collars, knee socks, handkerchief hem dresses and platform shoes!  Not since Saturday Night Fever has there been a movie that influenced current fashion trends as much as Boogie Nights...

The styles of the 70's were pretty laid back.  Clothes were comfortable and non constricting.  Here's some ideas on how you can get down with your own Boogie Nights inspired wardrobe!

Elizabeth Taylor...The Passing Of A Hollywood Icon

Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor...known to the world as Liz Taylor, passed away this morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles California.
In spite of her wealth, fame and star status, she had a lifetime of ill health, failed romances and personal tragedies through which she always remained consistent in maintaining an air of grace and dignity...

Not only was she a two time Academy Award Winner, she was also a devout humanitarian and dedicated AIDS fundraiser who helped start The American Foundation For AIDS Research.

Her 1st major screen role was in the 1950 film 'A Place In The Sun' opposite Montgomery Clift but it wasn't until thirteen years later that her rise to fame began to take off, as her role in the 1963 movie Cleopatra opposite soon to be husband Richard Burton sealed her spot in the ranks of Hollywood movie starlet status.

As a Fashion Icon, Elizabeth Taylor had the ability to turn simple into sexy with her ability to make mundane clothing seem magnificent with accessories. She quoted "Enough is never enough" in describing her personal style.  She was such a force to be reckoned with, so much so that she made the simple white slip she wore in the 1960's film 'Butterfied 8' seem like a haute couture dress!

In 1989 she said..."I think I'm becoming fantalistic...too much has happened in my life for me not to be fantalistic."   And that she was...completely and utterly fantalistic as she leaves us with her legacy of strength & beauty.
